The technology

How Verdex works.

From soil sensor to cloud analytics — every step of the Verdex data pipeline, explained.

1

Soil sensors read your garden in real time

Each Verdex Controller zone has a dedicated capacitive soil moisture sensor plus ambient temperature and humidity monitoring. Readings happen every 15 minutes by default and on-demand via the app. Data is stored locally so your system keeps working even when your internet is down.

2

The ESP-NOW mesh cascades data to the Hub

Controllers communicate peer-to-peer using ESP-NOW — a lightweight radio protocol that operates independently of your home Wi-Fi. Controllers automatically form a self-organizing mesh, relaying data from neighbors toward the Hub. No Wi-Fi in the field. No configuration.

3

The Hub bridges to the cloud

The Verdex Hub (ESP32-C6, USB powered) collects all controller data over ESP-NOW and publishes securely to the cloud over an encrypted connection. This is the single Wi-Fi connection point — it can sit near your router while controllers operate anywhere in the garden.

4

The algorithm decides when to water

The algorithm matches each zone's sensor reading against the watering profile for the assigned plant, factoring in moisture level, plant species requirements, time of day, watering history, and local weather. The result is a per-zone decision — not a blanket schedule. Each controller runs this logic on-device, so your garden keeps getting watered correctly even if your internet drops.

The plant database covers hundreds of common garden plants, vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals — each with research-backed moisture thresholds.
5

Solenoid valves execute the decision

For autonomous watering, each controller decides and acts entirely on its own. When you trigger or override a zone from the app, commands travel cloud → Hub → ESP-NOW mesh → Controller. Either way, each controller drives multiple latching solenoid valves independently — and latching valves hold their state without continuous power draw, critical for solar-powered battery longevity.

6

The app gives you full visibility and control

The iOS and Android app shows every zone's live moisture level, recent watering history, system health, and battery status. Override any zone, adjust plant assignments, set watering windows, and receive push notifications for every zone event.

Want the deeper dive?

Explore the engineering behind the mesh, the solar power system, and the plant-aware algorithm.

Under the hood

Engineered to understand.

Verdex pairs precision hardware with a plant-aware decision engine. Here's what makes it different from every timer-based controller on the shelf.

💧

The plant-aware algorithm

A timer waters on a clock. Verdex waters on evidence. Every zone's live capacitive moisture reading is compared against a research-backed target for the specific plant assigned to it. The engine weighs current moisture, species requirements, time of day, recent watering history, and local weather before making a per-zone decision. If the soil is already moist, Verdex simply doesn't water — and tells you why.

🍃

The plant database

At launch, the database covers the 200 most common U.S. vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and ornamentals — each with moisture thresholds drawn from horticultural research. Assign a plant to a zone and the moisture targets and watering behavior configure themselves. No agronomy degree required. The database expands continuously, and beta users help shape what we add next.

📡

ESP-NOW mesh networking

Most smart controllers need Wi-Fi at every device — a non-starter in a back garden. Verdex controllers talk to each other directly over ESP-NOW, a low-power 2.4 GHz radio protocol with up to 250m line-of-sight range. They form a self-organizing mesh that relays data node-to-node back to a single Hub. Add controllers anywhere; the mesh re-routes itself automatically.

☀

Solar power & energy budget

An integrated solar panel charges dual 18650 Li-ion cells, giving each controller weeks of autonomy through cloudy stretches. Latching solenoid valves hold open or closed with no continuous current, and the controller spends most of its life in low-power sleep — waking only to sense, decide, and report. The result is a device you install once and forget.

The data pipeline.

Four steps from soil to smartphone and back — each designed to keep working even when the others can't.

Resilient by design. Controllers store readings and make watering decisions locally. An internet outage affects the live dashboard and remote control — but your garden keeps getting watered correctly, and every log syncs once you're back online.

Getting started

Installation guide.

Installs in under two hours with basic hand tools. No electrician required.

No trench requiredNo field Wi-FiStandard garden hose fittings
1

Download the app and create your account

Get the Verdex app from the App Store or Google Play and create your account. Setup runs through the app, so do this first and keep your phone handy for the rest of the install.

2

Set up the Hub — scan to connect

Plug the Verdex Hub into any USB power source within Wi-Fi range of your home router; it can stay indoors. In the app, scan the QR code on the Hub — it joins your Wi-Fi and links to your account automatically, with no passwords to type. The Hub reaches your controllers over ESP-NOW radio, which penetrates walls and extends well beyond typical Wi-Fi range.

3

Mount or stake the Controller in your garden

The weatherproof controller mounts on a post, fence, or garden stake. Position where the solar panel receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. The angled panel faces south in the northern hemisphere for optimal charging.

IP65-rated — direct rain, hose spray, and sprinkler overspray are all fine. No additional weatherproofing needed.
4

Connect solenoid valve wires to zone terminals

Each zone terminal accepts standard 18–22AWG irrigation wire. Connect one solenoid valve per zone. The controller operates up to 8 zones independently. Standard 6–12VDC latching solenoid valves are compatible, including most third-party brands.

5

Insert soil sensors into each zone's root zone

Push each capacitive probe into the soil at root depth — typically 4–8" for most vegetables and annuals. The probe should be fully inserted with only the cable visible above the soil surface.

Sensors are color-coded by zone and connect to the matching terminal with a weatherproof quick-disconnect plug.
6

Add the Controller — power on and scan

Power the controller on and scan the QR code on its housing in the app. It's discovered and added to your system in seconds — no manual pairing codes. The QR ensures only your own controllers are added, even if a neighbor's Verdex system is within radio range. Repeat for any additional controllers.

Adding more controllers later is the same two steps: power on, scan the QR. They join the mesh automatically.
7

Build your garden and assign plants to zones

Use the drag-and-drop garden builder to map your zones. Assign a plant from the database to each zone — the algorithm automatically sets moisture targets and watering schedules. Verdex takes it from here.

Not sure what to enter? "Mixed vegetables" and "General garden" presets work well for most home gardens.

Our reason for being

Every drop intentional.

Half of all water used outdoors never helps a plant grow. Verdex exists to close that gap — to make water conservation the effortless byproduct of a healthier garden.

0%
of outdoor water is wasted on average — U.S. EPA WaterSense
0
used outdoors every day in the U.S.
Zero
guesswork — Verdex measures before it waters
How we save water

Conservation, built into the hardware.

📊

Measure, then water

Every watering decision starts with a live soil reading. If a zone is already at its target moisture, Verdex skips it — no water spent confirming what the soil already knows.

🌦

Weather-aware

The algorithm folds in local forecast data. Rain coming tonight? Verdex holds back today. A timer would water anyway — and so would the rain.

⚡

Solar-first energy

The hardware runs on sunlight. No mains power, no wall wart drawing phantom load year-round. Conservation that extends past the water meter.

Why it matters

A future where every garden is efficient.

Our vision is a world where every residential and commercial garden is managed by an interconnected network of intelligent controllers — eliminating guesswork, reducing water consumption by up to 50%, and improving plant health across diverse climates.

FAQ

No. Only the Verdex Hub needs Wi-Fi — and it can be indoors near your router. Controllers communicate via ESP-NOW, a low-power radio protocol with up to 250m line-of-sight range, operating completely independently of Wi-Fi.

Each controller includes dual 18650 Li-ion cells providing weeks of operation with zero solar input. Even overcast conditions generate meaningful charging current. The app will alert you when battery drops below 20%. You can also charge via the USB-C port manually.

No hard limit. Controllers relay data through each other via the ESP-NOW mesh, so your effective range from hub to the farthest controller is unlimited as long as neighboring nodes overlap in range. Additional controllers can be added at any time.

Solenoid valves are sold separately as accessories ($8 each). This lets customers with existing irrigation systems connect Verdex to their current valves. Verdex controllers are compatible with standard 6–12VDC latching solenoid valves, including most third-party brands.

At launch: the 200 most common U.S. vegetable garden species, herbs, fruit trees, and ornamentals. If a plant isn't listed you can use a similar-species profile or set custom moisture thresholds manually. We're actively expanding the database and welcome beta user requests.

Yes — IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. Direct rain, hose spray, and sprinkler overspray are fine. It does not mean fully submersible. IP65 validation is conducted on production-representative units by an accredited test lab prior to launch.

Basic scheduling and zone control are always free. Premium ($4.99/mo or $39.99/yr) unlocks 90-day historical moisture and watering logs, multi-user access, advanced analytics, and custom watering rules. Beta users receive 12 months of Premium at no charge.

Yes. The controller makes watering decisions locally based on sensor data, without requiring cloud connectivity. Internet outages affect the app's real-time dashboard and remote control, but autonomous watering continues. All logs sync to the cloud when connectivity is restored.

Controllers and Hub: 1-year limited warranty. Moisture sensors and solenoid valves: 90-day warranty. All cover manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship. View full warranty and returns policy →

We're targeting Q1 2027 to ship the first hardware to beta testers at early-bird pricing, once FCC Part 15B certification and IP65 validation are complete. An official public retail launch follows after we finalize the production design with beta lessons learned. We'll email confirmed dates as manufacturing and testing progress. See the full roadmap →

❓

FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about setup, compatibility, and the Verdex app.

Common troubleshooting.

Controller not appearing in app

Make sure Bluetooth is on and the controller is powered on (its LED should flash green) and within range of your phone when you scan its QR code. If it still doesn't appear, hold the reset button for 5 seconds to restart discovery, then scan again.

Sensor readings seem incorrect

Capacitive sensors may need 24–48 hours to stabilize after first insertion. Ensure the probe is fully inserted with no air gaps. Readings above 90% or below 5% may indicate poor soil contact.

Battery draining faster than expected

Check that the solar panel is not shaded. Panels need 4+ hours of direct sun daily. Reduced charging in winter months at higher latitudes is normal — the battery reserve still provides several weeks of operation.

Zones not watering on schedule

If soil moisture is above the plant's target threshold, Verdex intentionally skips watering — this is the system working correctly. Check the Analytics tab to see current moisture levels and last watering event for each zone.
